| CURRENCIES: Dollar Rallies On Payrolls, Trade Gap; Yen Off As Carry Returns
The dollar rallied to a one-week high against the yen and rose versus the euro Friday, after a government report showed a slowdown in U.S. job growth last month wasn't as bad as some traders had feared. Nonfarm payrolls increased by 97,000, slightly lower than the 100,000 expected by economists surveyed by MarketWatch and the lowest since January 2005, but many traders had been bracing for a much weaker number. The report dashed many traders' expectations that the Federal Reserve would cut interest rates in the near term. "Markets are cheering today's report due to the low bar of expectations set by the deteriorating U.S. data of the past week," said Ashraf Laidi, chief foreign-exchange analyst at CMC Markets in New York. So-called whisper forecasts had been as low as 60,000, he said. In New York trading, the dollar was quoted at 118.23 yen, compared with 117.08 yen late Thursday.

Microsoft Gambles One EU Customer Will Make Its Case
It has been "Issues Week" all week for Microsoft, and Thursday, the company took on the dreaded interoperability issue. But its choice of message was called into question a bit yesterday after Microsoft boasted of having signed up its first official customer for its communications and interoperability IP licenses: Quest Software, the manufacturer of the Toad data modeling system. Microsoft was ordered by the European Commission - the legislative arm of the EU government - to provide software libraries and instructions that can make other software, including other operating systems, fully interoperate with Windows. Microsoft has been licensing some portions of its Windows source code that enable interoperability since January 2006, though it has struggled in recent months to come up with fees for new, key portions that are acceptable to the EC.
